| Property for sale Nerja The completion of new roads, the spread of mains electricity and of course abundant fresh water has made the inland part of this region a very pleasant place to live. The region is bounded to the North East by the Sierra del Alcazar national park and mountains rising up to Granada, bounded to the North West by the Sierra de Camarolos mountains above Malaga and stretches down to the sea from the port of Malaga through the towns of Torre de Mar, Torrox and Nerja. This coast is the warmest part of the Mediterranean in winter. The abundant fresh water and a mild climate protected from the North by high mountain ranges and moderated by the sea in summer has attracted generations of farmers from distant lands who have created some of the most fertile ground on the Mediterranean coast. Recorded history begins with the arrival of the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians and the Romans. Now, in the second millennium, discerning travellers from Northern Europe are beginning to appreciate the attractions of the countryside and the life of the 31 tones and villages that have grown over the last few hundred years. The last five years have seen the completion of the motorway to Lake Vinuela from the coast. The lake is now just 20 minutes drive down to the coast at Torre del Mar. The year 200 saw the completion of the coast motorway from Malaga International Airport round Torre del Mar to Nerja. Thus most of the villages in this area are brought within easy reach of the airport.

Nerja Propertyhf or sale in the towns and villages Vinuela: pop 1,900, altitude 131m. Parish church of San Jose built in 16th Century. Lake Vinuela: was created by the dam built on the Cuaro river to improve the irrigation of the area with its crops of peaches, olives, grapes and cereals. The area round the lake is zoned as of outstanding natural beauty to prevent pollution. Motor boats are prohibited but sailing and fishing are being encouraged and three small beaches are being created. The new Hotel Vinuela opened in April 1997 each bedroom decorated to represent a village in La Axarquia and a fine dining room. Property for sale Nerja, Los Romanes: A small old white village on a hillside overlooking the lake. It boasts two bars, a mini-market and a lakeside restaurant. This area is now only 20 minutes from the sea at Torre del Mar. Alcaucin: pop 1,500, altitude 510m. Near the distinctive U shaped pass of El Bouquet de Zafarraya through which the old Malaga-Granada highway runs. The castle of Zalia was first built by the Phoenicians and later used by the Moors with the castles of Comares and Bentomiz to form the defensive triangle of La Axaquia. Periana: pop 3,700, altitude 547m. The town is surrounded by mountains rising to 1,637m while the streets are steep with steps in places. On the main square the Plaza de la Fuente, public fountains run freely where the ladies of the village used to wash their clothes. The Moorish baths here continued to be used for their medicinal water until the 19th Century. Peaches here are said to be the best in Spain, celebrated with the Peach Fair at the beginning of September. Velez-Malaga: pop 25,000 is the administrative capital of the region. History includes remains of cities of Greek, Phoenician and Carthaginian origin while the damaged castle is a reminder of the battle in 1704 when the French defeated the English. Now a modern bustling town provides a wide range of services. Torre-del-Mar on the coast just south of Velez-Malaga is roughly at the centre of the region. A long sandy beach with a promenade and gardens and a wide choice of restaurants and entertainment makes this a popular resort for local and overseas visitors.
Sayalonga: pop 1,300, altitude 350m, lies in the foothills just to the east of Torre-del-Mar and is the centre of an attractive fertile area which has attracted home builders from overseas who want the seclusion of the country while within easy reach of the coastal towns. Competa: pop 2,500, altitude 635m is 9Km further along the road from Sayalonga. It is a thriving country town with Moorish layout round the Plaza Almijara where the local wines can be sampled in streetside cafes. Sedella: pop 1,000, altitude 689m, can be approached by continuing a further 10 Km from Competa or directly from Lake Vinuela benefiting from the new road construction. This village offers dramatic scenery with the Sierra Tejada rising 2,068m as a protective backdrop and the sea in the distance. Following narrow winding streets white washed and gleaming clean with banks of flowers you can discover some four restaurants and two bars to sample the local cooking and wines. Tucked away among the hills, houses have been built for several British families who have settled into life in this easy going village on the edge of the National Park 40 minutes from the coast. History spans from Paleolithic remains some 30,000 years old found in the Nerja caves where Ballet and Opera are performed now. Nerja means in Arabic "the place of the bubbling fresh water". This same water brings life to terraces of fresh vegetables and strawberries exported round the world and sparkle to the many fountains and waterfalls that decorate the gardens. This town and its many bars and restaurants is alive for 12 months of the year.
