Nerja on the Costa Tropicana enjoys a sub-tropical climate which in winter is the warmest part of Europe and certainly warmer than any other part of Spain. The traditional crop was always cane sugar. Nowhere else in Europe can grow it! The coolest month is January but due to the shelter of the mountains the records show an average mid-day temperature in the mid 60s F.
In the summer again due to the mountains and the undulating nature of the land near the coast there is almost always a breeze which has a moderating effect of excessive heat. House design and orientation are important.
Malaga airport has daily flights from the main UK airports and services from many of the minor airports which are often more pleasant to fly from.
The new coastal motorway brings Nerja to within 45 minutes peaceful drive to Malaga airport. This is a far cry from the old days of threading through the traffic in Malaga city and following a dirt road between the fishing boats an Rincon de la Victoria. The new motorway link round Velez Malaga to Lake Vinuela brings more of the delightful inland villages within easy reach.
The motorway network now permits a drive from a ferry port in northern Spain leaving 9am in the morning and arriving by 4pm in the afternoon.
The area is bounded to the north by the foothills of the Sierra Nevada gently rising to the hill village of Frigiliana, to the East and West by farming land and green zones where building is strictly regulated and to the south by several sandy beaches. Within this area there are  several different types of property. Apartments and town houses in Nerja itself often a short walk from the wide range of restaurants for  which the town is famous  ---- Groups of villas and two storey apartment buildings set in gardens in small urbanisations which offer a swimming  pool ----Larger urbanisations to cater for those who wan on site sporting facilities, pools and restaurants-------Detached  villas  with their own pools either close to Nerja or secluded on a hilltop or cliff edge.

3. La Herradura.

To the east of Nerja the mountains come right to the edge of the sea. Here the corniche type road provides access to spectacular villas with terraces and flower gardens overhanging the sea. Easy access to both Nerja and Almunecar have made this favoured location for substantial villas with a few pockets of land remaining for further building.

4.Frigiliana

Ten minutes drive to the north of Nerja this village 435m above sea level has been the centre of a settled area from prehistoric times. The Moorish uprising against the Catholic Monarchs in 1569 is commemorated in mosaics on the walls. With improved roads this area offers a number of villa locations with outstanding views of the mountains and the sea. This four bedroom house on a 3100m2 plot was built recently.

Five minutes drive to the west of Jerja these newer developments on a headland near Banana Beach offer a choice of middle range properties with sea views. Small groups of villas are set in gardens round shard pools. A few larger individuals villas with private pools are being built and some resale come on the market from time to time.

6. Alhambra.

Within walking distance of the town there are several attractive estates of apartments and linked houses limited to two floors high. Swimming pools, tennis, shops and restaurants are close at hand.
